Arrival by plane

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is one of the world's largest airports. It is situated approximately 20 km from Amsterdam. Ninety airlines fly to and from Schiphol and have offices at the airport or in Amsterdam. You can reach the city from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in just half an hour by train, taxi or hotel shuttle.

Arrival by train

If arriving in Amsterdam by train, it's likely that your journey will terminate at Amsterdam Central Station. From there it is simple to complete your journey with public transport or taxi. If you are travelling from another station in the Netherlands, it's possible that you can choose another Amsterdam train station nearer your accommodation.

Moving through Amsterdam

In Amsterdam you can move through the city in various ways. In the inner city circle everything can be done by foot, but if you want to travel greater distances you can either rent a bike or make use of public transportation.

When you decide on public transportation, you can take the tram, bus, metro, train or even the boat. For transportation you need an OV-chipcard, which works for any kind of public transportation. You can get the cards at Schiphol Airport, all train stations and stores that sell magazines (cost: EUR 7.50 for an empty card). You can charge your card at any railway station. Most of the public transportation is arranged by GVB. They also sell cards that are valid on their vehicles for unlimited use for multiple days, see their website. You can also buy one hour tickets at the driver for EUR 2.70.

A tip: when you are in a tram, ask the conductor for a "Lijnennetkaart". It is a free map of the city, and they are of outstanding quality!
