Minutes of the ERCIM/W4G workshop

Tuesday, November, 29th - Thursday, December, 2nd

The workshop was attended by 32 people. The morning session on the first day consisted of keynotes of three people from CERN/Geneva.

"The W3 Consortia and the WebCore Esprit Project" by Francois Fluckiger
"The CERN WWW technical development programme: Overview, and special focus on the Arena browser" by Håkon W. Lie
"The CERN WWW library and server. Status and ongoing developments, including HTTP specifications" by Henrik Frystyk

In the afternoon we splitted up in three subgroups. Minutes for the groups are available:

The Protocols and Performance Subgroup (chaired by J-F Abramatic)
The Tech/Integration Subgroup (chaired by David DeRoure)
The User Interface and Tools Subgroup (chaired by Victoria Burrill)

Subgroups met also on the second day of the workshop and a plenary session was scheduled for the last day for reporting back from the subgroup to every one and discussion on the future of the ERCIM/W4G. The following is an overview of topics discussed at the meeting as well as names of people/institutes with interests in these areas:

Scripting: CWI (Steven Pemberton), DRAL (Simon Dobson), VU (Anton Eliens), University of Southampton (who?).
SGML: University of Hertfordshire (Brian Robinson), INRIA (Anne-Marie Vercoustre).
Continuous Media: INRIA (Patrick Duval), DRAL (Victoria A Burrill), VU (Anton Eliens), University of Southampton (who?).
Databases: University of Southampton (David DeRoure), CWI (Fred Kwakkel).
Searching: Techn. Universiteit Eindhoven (Paul de Bra), CWI (Fred Kwakkel).

In the future the ERCIM/W4G will:

stimulate collaboration between institutes on projects regarding W3 by, a.o., maintaining a list of (W4G) institutes, people and their interest.
be an information source in presenting on-going research and development in the Web world through the W4G Web pages (http://www.cwi.nl/ERCIM/W4G) and a mailing list (w4g-list-request@cwi.nl).
organize Workshops, Conferences, and BOFs. The next workshop will be held in February, Paris. Workshop should not be on a too specific topic. W4G plans to organise a BOF workshop at the 3rd W3 conference in Darmstadt.
create a software archive for exchange of prototype systems from W4G institutes.
