Subject: PEM talks David Walschots and Nico Schoenmaker, August 24 From: "H.J.S. Basten" To: pem-list Date: Fri, 20 Aug 2010 10:30:03 +0200 Dear all, You are cordially invited for our next PEM talk on Tuesday August 24. David Walschots and Nico Schoenmaker will be presenting their master's projects. Please find the abstracts of their talks below. The session will be held from 10 to 11 in room L016 at CWI. Hope to see you all there. Best regards, Bas Basten ---------------------------------- Talk 1: A case study on the cost and benefits of bus-oriented architectures David Walschots The use of software buses has increased due to the popularity of service-oriented architectures, even though it is unknown whether software buses and the architectures within which they reside achieve their proposed benefits, and at what cost. If benefits are not achieved or are difficult to achieve, then evolution of systems containing a software bus will be more difficult and costly than expected. This thesis observes the achievement of the proposed benefit of time decoupling, which enables two components to participate in an interaction without both being available at the same time. Time decoupling is found to be achievable, but requires that operations specified within components are coarse-grained. The cost of coordinating components connected to a software bus is found to grow at a rate similar to the total size growth of the components which are coordinated. Software buses can achieve time decoupling. Relative cost does not grow as systems using a software bus evolve. ----------------------------------
