Next week's version will obviously be better, due to your useful remarks and comments. Here is the abstract: This announcement can be found at Rapid System Understanding Date: 18.06.98 Time: 10:00 Venue: M280 CWI Speaker: Arie van Deursen Title: Rapid System Understanding [joint work with Tobias Kuipers] Rapid system understanding is required in the planning, feasibility assessment and cost estimating phases of a system renovation project. In the paper, we apply a number of analyses on two large legacy COBOL systems from the banking field. We describe the analyses performed, and discuss possible interpretations of these analyses. Lessons learned include: 1. The open architecture adopted is satisfactory, and can take advantage of a wide range of understanding tools available; and 2. To handle inter-system variability effectively, the flexibility of lexical analysis is required. Although most of our experiments are setup to be generic, some of them are specific to the two case studies. In order to use those experiments on different systems, they would need to be adapted for those systems. _________________________________________________________________ The programming environment meetings are a forum for the presentation and discussion of new ideas, ongoing and finished work. A typical meeting addresses a subject in the area of programming environments, program generation, algebraic specification, term rewriting, parsing, etc. A presentation ideally takes between 45 and 90 minutes. Meetings taking longer than 45 minutes are interrupted by a coffeebreak. Most Thursdays, a meeting is held which starts at 10:00 am. in one of the rooms at CWI/WINS. Exceptionally, dates or times may change. The program of the meetings is available on WWW: http://www.cwi.nl/~pem _________________________________________________________________
